Peter Nelson
Peter J. Nelson is the Deputy Administrator and Director of the Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight (CCIIO). He is a former Senior Policy Fellow at Center of the American Experiment where he focused his attention on the intersection of state and national health care policy.
He is a leading expert on the Affordable Care Act and health insurance regulation. From late 2017 until 2021, he served as a Senior Advisor to the Administrator at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). In this role, he helped lead the development and implementation of insurance market regulations and state innovation waivers.
Nelson received a B.A. in economics from Wheaton College and a law degree from the University of Minnesota Law School where he was a member of the Minnesota Law Review.
